What is intermodal transport?
Intermodal transport is essentially a form of multimodal transport in which more than one transport mode is used. The only difference is that with intermodal transport, the loading unit remains the same throughout, which means the goods are not transferred separately but as a whole. This mainly involves goods transport using (sea) containers, swap bodies and trailers, though this transport method may also include carrying whole trucks on a train, ship or other vehicle.
Transport modes for intermodal transport
Various means and modes of transport can be used for intermodal transport. However, you need to know exactly which modes of transport you want to use. Are you planning to ship your goods via truck and sea container transport? If so, the smartest choice is to opt for a sea container, because the cargo is shipped as a whole and not transferred to another loading unit. If that’s in fact what you want, multimodal transport is a better option. In short, the following transport modes can be used:
- Road haulage
- Sea freight and inland navigatiom
- Transport by rail (including carriage of the whole loaded truck)
The resources you should use for intermodal transport depend on the cargo and the route the goods need to cover. Your requirements in terms of budget and delivery time are also an important factor. Provided it’s well thought out, intermodal transport is environmentally friendly and cost-effective. We’ll be glad to help you choose the right kind of intermodal transport.
The advantages of intermodal transport
One of the biggest advantages of intermodal transport is that the transport flows are combined as much as possible, making optimal use of the flow of goods. This brings various advantages, including the possibility to avoid traffic jams on the road network and restrictions like the law on driving hours. This ultimately means cost savings for you.
