What is Intermodal Transport?

Intermodal transport, also known as combined transport, is a form of freight transport where goods are moved using multiple modes of transport such as truck, train or ship, without the goods themselves being handled during transfers. This is typically done using standardized containers, our 45ft reefer containers, or our refrigerated and freezer trailers.

Difference Between Intermodal and Multimodal Transport

Intermodal transport uses consistent cargo carriers throughout the entire transport, making it ideal for bulk goods and (sea) containers. This means less chance of damage or loss of cargo. On the other hand, multimodal transport offers flexibility for transporting refrigerated and frozen products, allowing goods to be transferred between different modes of transport to receive special handling and maintain freshness.

How Does Intermodal Transport Work?

It starts with loading the goods into a standardized cargo carrier, such as a (sea) container or our reefer containers or trailers. These loading units are then transferred between different transportation modes, such as trucks, trains, and ships, without unloading the cargo. This ensures a streamlined transport process.

Benefits of Intermodal Transport

Intermodal transport by DLG offers the following benefits:

  • Efficient: By combining different modes of transport, we always find the most optimal route to save time and costs.

  • Flexible: Whether it’s bulk goods, (sea) containers, or other cargo, our intermodal transport offers flexibility to meet your specific needs, always thinking along with you.

Sustainability of Intermodal Transport

Intermodal transport helps reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions, making it better for the environment. Additionally, we alleviate road traffic by shifting part of the transport to rail and waterways. This contributes to a cleaner and more livable environment while simultaneously improving transport efficiency.
